An important article from Do or Die issue 9 criticising the activist mentality in the direct action movement. In 1999, in the aftermath of the June 18th global day of action, a pamphlet called Reflections on June 18th was produced by some people in London, as an open-access collection of "contributions on the politics behind the events that occurred in the City of London on June 18, 1999". Contained in this collection was an article called 'Give up Activism' which has generated quite a lot of discussion and debate both in the UK and internationally, being translated into several languages and reproduced in several different publications.[1] Here we republish the article together with a new postscript by the author addressing some comments and criticisms received since the original publication.

O PANDA GORDO
title author publisher Type / size colour price stock 1st pub. date blurb
a cosmos inside João sobral O PANDA GORDO zine / A4 ish b/w on colour paper £4.00 2 2016 "João Sobral is not a prolific comic artist, and he doesn’t tell stories. When he goes for a good panel-and-speech-bubble adventure, he’s thinking out loud, so the format of the zine gets larger. Like in "Money Worries #1", there’s a little study in ethics: am I doing enough? How is the magnitude of my will manifested in the material world?

"The display looks like those inert gods laying in Egyptian sequential bands. The protagonist is closed in a bed of lines, looking outside the frame, his business indifferent to representation. However, the lay dude stretching inside the panel is not a god, just thinking about the concept of god as a crutch to think about the Big All. As he squirms through the pages, he turns to all compass directions which, as we know, are metaphorically charged in different ways. Eventually, the flatness of the drawing reveals the contraption: try as you might, there is no turning it inside out. When you get to the back cover, you are already outside the cosmos."

a day Mariana pita O PANDA GORDO zine / A4 ish colour £5.00 4 2016 A DAY, originally made for the Comics Workbook Composition Competition in 2015, takes us through one single day of the lives of a young couple with a peculiar job.

It's difficult to choose what's our favourite thing about this comic, if it's the stunning visual sequences presented in a charming coloured pencil style or the amusing dialogues between the two characters. While the latter is already one of Mariana Pita's trademarks, the former, despite not being a complete surprise, will amaze even her greatest fans.

Mariana makes illustration, comics, music and animation. She has been developing some incredible work in the last few years, followed by a small but dedicated group of people. I'm lucky enough to be part of that group and it's a pleasure to finally publish some of Mariana's work through O Panda Gordo.

before it dissappears João sobral O PANDA GORDO zine / A4 ish b/w on colour paper £4.00 1 2016 It all began with the title: BEFORE IT DISAPPEARS. What does it mean? What is disappearing? Is it the intention of making a new zine? Is it the ability to do so? Maybe it’s just the drawings João found in some old sketchbooks and loose sheets. “Let me put this in a zine before it disappears”, maybe that’s what he thought. Or maybe he just wanted to make a zine before his sanity disappeared. Yes, making zines is kind of a therapy to him.

I would say it’s also important to remember that he recently made a show (with Ed Cheverton) called “I want to escape but not to disappear”. How can that be related to this new zine, specially considering that some of the drawings presented here are sketches made for the paintings he had at the mentioned show? I don’t really know, no one knows, he surely doesn’t know as he doesn’t even care. He's probably lying about that though.

What can be said with certainty, I think, about these 20 pages is that they depict some speculations around the human body and spirit. But then it’s possible that that's not really the best way to put it… Well, my final guess is that maybe the title is saying to the reader: “enjoy this zine before it disappears”. How about that?

spare me Disa Wallander O PANDA GORDO zine / A4 ish colour £6.00 2 2017 Disa Wallander's work often deals with dark existential anxieties and deep philosophical questions with the same amount of eagerness and cynicism. It feels kind of hopeful and hopeless at the same time, but if it ever seems light hearted or vain, you're probably somehow missing its characteristic twisted irony.

SPARE ME is an abstract and exploratory reflection on the sweet paradoxes of human existence, especially the relation between the individual and the socially constructed world we live in. What does it take to be able to find joy in the things around us when we know that everything is a construction and that we all share the same impending doom? It won't give you the answers but you'll sure enjoy SPARE ME if you read it in the sun.

money worries 1 João Sobral O PANDA GORDO 17 x 22 cm b/w £3.50 2 2014 MONEY WORRIES is a comics zine series João started in 2014 with the intention of talking about money and the pervert way it currently works. It is named after a homonymous song by The Maytones.

It was first inspired by the book "Small Is Beautiful: a study of economics as if people mattered" (1973) by E. F. Schumacher. Also by other contemporary economists who have been talking about reinventing money and reforming the current monetary system.

graite stuff 1 João Sobral O PANDA GORDO Zine / A5 ish b/w £2.50 2 2017 GRAITE STUFF is one of the manifestations of João Sobral's desire to produce comics continuously throughout 2017. This new series will be published as often as possible and will be just the place to experiment ideas that don't fit anywhere else and see where they go.

The first issue introduces us to two odd characters as they have a brief and casual encounter. As always, Sobral likes to leave some subtle hints in the details. Will these two figures come back in the following issues of GRAITE STUFF? Nobody knows it yet but let's hope they will.

MRS PATERSONS' PRESS riso magazine / A4 colour £10.00 1 2015 … nor this - nor that … does not matter - need not be. With eyes wide open and looping brain, the strange voice and strange vision of an old moon-rock appears. It is the grate in front of our sleep, our dark reptilian retreat. With it, we can step back, and back again, where dreaming is a constant state. Released from a stone valve, connected to a gnarled space of ancient technology that lays dormant in our skull. Waiting for us, oscillating at 40 Hz, in the sub-cortical. Asleep. Awake. Staring, at the dirty glass on the shelf next to our head. You are dreaming, or not. Neither here, Neither there, a type of 4th state, an eternal place of liminality. A space between these pages, sticky from the residue of a native culture that keeps them closed.

Read these images out loud.

They were made by Night-walkers. Read in time with their persisting slowness. Hypnos, sleep … agogeus, guide. This dream line is of blood. All part of a gradient, within a realm of inner experience and pre-logical forms of thought - from creativity - dreaming – hypnogogia - to finally, magic and mysticism. Scratching, scratching, the scratches around the keyhole. Each mark producing the smell of a temple’s damp corner stones, transformed and over powered by the cosmos. And leading to a monstrous flood of blood over a green land, ‘Look at it well, it is wholly real and it will be so’.

nomads wont stand still for their portraits joar nango JOAR NANGO book / A4 ish colour £11.00 4
This zine accompanied a video work of the same name. Of this work, David Thorpe has explained, “As part of his research into the informal architecture of the Ger-districts in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Joar Nango visited the country a series of times and made the short film Nomads Won’t Stand Still for their Portraits from footage shot there. The film investigates the vernacular architecture of these areas as an architectural typology and includes footage of the production of large wall pieces for the traditional yurts made from felt. The felts were made in collaboration with a family-run felt-factory located in one of the Ger-settlements. Joar Nango is interested in the link between nomadic thinking and the collective logic and growth of urban settlements and sees his film Nomads Won’t Stand Still for their Portraits as an extension of previous works which deal with indigenous identity and temporary/nomadic architecture in different ways.”

who says concrete doesn't burn, have you tried? Edited by Stefanie Schulte Strathaus and Florian Wüst arsenal book / A4 ish colour £14.00 2
Who says concrete doesn’t burn, have you tried? deals with 1980s West Berlin in regard to the medium of film and the institution of cinema.

In the decade before the fall of the Berlin Wall, one was no longer committed to the World Revolution but intent on realizing alternative ways of life, between the nuclear apocalypse and the squatter’s movement, between being gay/lesbian and feminist, between punk, new wave and drugs. The renouncement of normality was expressed in aesthetic experiments, costumed mises-en-scènes, or the refusal of many films to adhere to a self-contained narration.

The cinema as a space where one spent entire nights played an important role in West Berlin in those days. While a larger number of venues opened in squatted houses, which together with the Kino Arsenal, founded in 1970, formed a counter-pole to the commercial cinema landscape, urban spaces were converted to temporary projection locations in which film, super-8 installations, music, and performance bred each other.

The book expands on the film series of the same name screened at Kino Arsenal in October 2006. Rainer Bellenbaum, Justin Hoffmann, Mathias Heyden & Ines Schaber, Dirk Schaefer, Stefanie Schulte Strathaus, Marc Siegel, Nicole Wolf, and Florian Wüst address the specific social and cultural conditions of the enclosed city in a variety of ways seen from the present, while the artist Krimo contributed a map of memory to the book.
edgewise: a picture of cookie mueller Chloé Griffin Bbooks Verlag HARDBACK, 6 x 9 in. / 336 pgs B/W £18.00 2
Cookie Mueller (1949-1989) was a firecracker, a cult figure, a wild child, a writer, a go-go dancer, a mother and a queer icon. A child of suburban 1950s Maryland, she made her name first as an actress in the films of John Waters, and then as an art critic and columnist, a writer of hilarious stories and a maven of New York's downtown art world. Edgewise, by Berlin-based actress and writer Chloé Griffin, tells the story of Cookie's life through an oral history composed of more than 80 interviews with the people who knew her, including John Waters, Mink Stole, Gary Indiana, Sharon Niesp, Max Mueller, Linda Yablonsky, Richard Hell, Amos Poe and Raymond Foye. The contributors take us from the late-1960s artist communes of Baltimore to 1970s Provincetown and New York, through 1980s Berlin and Positano. Along with the text, Edgewise includes artwork, unpublished photographs and archival material and photography by Philip-Lorca diCorcia, David Armstrong, Robert Mapplethorpe, Peter Hujar and others.
